Asbestos within water supplies can pose a certain level of risk to the public as many water system pipes built before the ban of asbestos may include asbestos in concrete or cement. As these wastewater, stormwater and water systems continue to develop cracks and degrade over time the danger of asbestos leaching into water supplies can grow. Contamination can occur due to proximity to contaminated materials or even following a natural disaster when clean water supplies may be scarce. The danger with asbestos particles within water results from exposing fibers into the air after the water evaporates. Asbestos from the declining condition of cement piping can then become deposited on other surfaces including walls, floors, soils, or vegetation upon evaporation the airborne fibers are released potentially indoors and out.
Whilst asbestos in water supply does not show the same elevated risks as if it was inhaled it is still dangerous. If asbestos fibers are breathed in, the fibers can cause serious health problems including many chronic conditions including asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. The risk of contracting these disease increases with the number of fibers inhaled. Many symptoms don’t appear until many years after the initial exposure as inhalation is the most common route of exposure to asbestos. Remaining educated on the risks associated with hazardous materials including asbestos will help to keep you safe.
Asbestos can also be found during demolition as buildings constructed prior to 2000 begin to show their age. During renovation and demolition projects, dangerous asbestos can be exposed which requires the removal by experts.
