How do I know if I have asbestos in my home?
Asbestos was banned in Australia in 2003 and New Zealand enacted a National Asbestos ban in 2016. It is important to note that
asbestos cannot be identified by eye and asbestos testing by a NATA accredited laboratory will confirm the presence of asbestos.
Whilst asbestos is a banned substance, it is still commonly found in many products including but not limited to:
- The backing of floor coverings including asbestos vinyl floor sheeting, vinyl asbestos floor tiles, carpet underlay, cement flooring,
kitchen backsplash, etc.
- Outdoor areas including asbestos fences, roofing, gutters, soffits, etc.
- Internal and external wall sheeting
- Asbestos adhesives including bitumen
- Sprayed insulation (often referred to as ‘limpet’)
- Electrical switch boards
- Mastic
- Fire doors
Prior to any home renovations you may have planned, it is best practice to have a sampling survey completed by a competent hygienist.
Additionally, those in specific industries such as tradespersons (painters, electricians, builders, plumbers), construction and industrial
workers and firefighters are at a higher risk of being exposed to asbestos if unsafe work practices are not followed.
Any suspicious looking materials must be investigated and tested, then removed accordingly by a licensed asbestos removal expert.
